Potomac Yard Metro Finishes Permitting, Moves Into Construction Phase

On Friday, Nov. 15, the Army Corps of Engineers issued the final permit required for construction on the Metro station to start in the wetlands, staff said at a Nov. 19 meeting. The announcement was followed by a small round of applause from the Potomac Yard Metrorail Implementation Work Group (PYMIG), a group that’s been meeting since 2011 to consider issues related to opening a Metro station in Potomac Yard.

After the announcement, staff laid out a new timeline for construction work to begin over the next few months, after a series of delays. Developer JBG SMITH is adding to its already extensive redevelopment plans in and around Crystal City.

The top property owner in the so-called National Landing area (Crystal City, Pentagon City and Potomac Yard) just revealed plans for a new office building, just down the street from Amazon’s planned HQ2.

JBG Smith Properties (NYSE: JBGS) and Lionstone Investments have filed a concept plan for the initial phase of the North Potomac Yard overhaul, to include the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus and a host of additional new development where a Regal movie theater currently stands.

Property owner JBG Smith announced late Tuesday afternoon a major new redevelopment push in Crystal City in the wake of Amazon’s arrival.

The developer says it is planning to redevelop “approximately 2.6 million square feet of space across five multifamily buildings and one office building.”

Arlington Fields Officially Named ‘Boeing Fields at Long Bridge Park’

Today, Arlington County unveiled the newly installed signs naming Boeing Fields at Long Bridge Park. These park signs recognize The Boeing Company’s generous donation to support maintenance and operational expenses at both Long Bridge Park and the future Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center, as well as provide access and programming for active duty military and their families at the aquatics center.

The Over 5,000 Units Headed to National Landing

Although a new Amazon campus is ostensibly jump-starting development in the “National Landing” area of northern Virginia, encompassing parts Crystal City, Potomac Yard and Pentagon City, some other projects seem to be waiting for other pieces to fall into place. Meanwhile, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is looking to unify the Amazon branded super-neighborhood under the BID’s umbrella; Arlington County Board is holding a public hearing on the matter later this month.
